The Commune box
I imagined a home box for Commune in October 2025; what shipped instead was a static site on Cloudflare and a package on npm, with no home box required.
The idea was to own the machine that handled capture, notes and private questions. By March 2026, my home setup included Thoth, a 2018 MacBook Pro in clamshell mode, alongside a Beelink mini PC running Docker services, connected over Tailscale. That setup gave the idea somewhere to take shape.
I connected it to Data sovereignty for individuals and Local-First Software. I wanted fewer dependencies and more control over where my work lived. Main Branch was how I imagined helping someone learn the reference file system before taking on their own hardware.
I also imagined AI shapes voice dumps into atomic notes happening locally. Keeping capture and questions on a box was an aspiration for that setup. It wasn’t evidence that every model call stayed there. This was an earlier hardware direction for Commune; owning a wiki no longer depends on following it.
